Sunshine, sunshine, and more sunshine for the next few days! There's really nothing to complain about—if only there were a little more snow, winter would be perfect.
Unfortunately, there has been too little snow in recent months to prepare the sledding slope on the Weissenbergen and the entire ski area for winter sports, but don't worry, there is still plenty to experience in and around the Aktivhostel HängeMatt. Perhaps as a half-day program or a change of pace, because the Elm ski lifts are now open for skiing and snowboarding fans!
We have put together some excursion tips for you in Glarus South!
*Hiking tours to the Weissenberge: Our sun terrace offers circular hiking trails with scenic barbecue spots or a stop at the Edelwyss mountain restaurant with a playground AND TRAMPOLINE.
*Hike to Obererbs with a stop at the Obererbs ski hut.
*Excursion to Mettmen Alp in Europe's oldest wildlife reserve with a stop at the Mettmen mountain hotel.
*Pack your bike, scooter, or skateboard, because in Engi (4 km from the hostel) there is a cool pump track with barbecue, playground, and soccer field.
*When the sun has disappeared behind the mountains—of course, our in-house bouldering and games rooms!
*Early bird winter feeling: morning frost walks on the Suworowweg trail – perhaps combined with a llama trek with www.glarnerlamas.ch.
*Visit the brand new Vreni Schneider Museum, UNESCO Visitor Center in Elm, or, for railway enthusiasts, the Sernftalbahn Museum.
*For more winter fun, take a trip to the covered GLKB Arena ice rink in Glarus
*And for nature lovers, the Glarnerland Nature Center has a few more excursion tips – the current exhibition on snow hares will be open again from January 5, 2026.
*In addition to limited skiing, the mountain railways in Braunwald offer an alternative program with tours of the snow groomers and snow cannons, presentations on the ski patrol and rescue service, use of the rope park, and culinary offerings!
*And the cool thing about Glarnerland is that all these great offers can be accessed free of charge with the Glarnerland Pass and the free public transport included in it!
